In 2005, Tracy Hawkins visited the continent of Africa, specifically Tanzania, with the intention of assisting with pottery techniques.  During this time, she was fortunate to meet Mesiaki Kimirei and Elias Nnko.  They were united in their desire to improve the water situation in Arusha and decided to work together. Mesiaki Kimirei found the land and a building for a pottery factory. Their first project was called the Sing’isi Pottery Project.

In 2007, Mesiaki and Elias were able to get training on the ceramic water filtration manufacturing process. In early 2008, they were able to establish their ceramic water filter factory and changed the name of their project to Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa.  Testing and observations performed by Ansley Lemons, a student of Emory University Rollins School of Community Health College established that the water is clean and safe to drink.

Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa was established because 46 percent of people in Africa are unable to find clean water. The mission of Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa is to save the lives of Africans and reduce disease to improve the lives of Africans.

Mwaka 2005,Tracy Hawkins alitembelea bara la Afrika hususani Tanzania akiwa na nia ya kanzisha darasa la ufinyanzi.Wakati akiwa anatoa nafunzo hayo alibahatika kukutana na Mesiaki Kimirei and Elias Nnko .Waliungana na kufanya kazi kwa pamoja .Kadri walivo endelea kufanya kazi kwa pamoja Mesiaki Kimirei aliweza  kupata kiwanja na nyumba ambayo inatumika kama sehemu yao ya kazi.Wakati huo mradi wao uliitwa singi’si Pottery Project .

Mwaka 2007,Mesiaki na Elias waliweza kupata mafunzo juu ya chujio za udongo na waliifanikiwa kupata maarifa ya uzalishaji wa chujio hizi.Mwanzoni mwa mwaka 2008 waliweza kuendeleza mradi wao na walibadili jina la mradi wao kuwa Safe Water Ceramics of East Africa ambao unahusika na uzalishaji wa chujio hizi za maji.  Maji yaliyojichuja toka kwenye chujio hizi za udongo zinatoa maji safi na salama.Kulingana na uchunguzi na utafiti uliofanyika na Ansley Lemons ambae alikua mwanafunzi wa Emory University Rollins school chuo cha afya za jamii ilithibitika kuwa maji hayo ni safi na salama kwa kunywa.

Sababu ilioipa motisha uundaji wa shirika hili ni kwamba asilimia 46 ya watu wa Afrika wameshindwa kupata maji safi na salama .Kutokana na hili umuhimu wakunywa maji safi na salama ulionekana nauliwezeshwa kwa uzalishaji wa chujio hizi za udongo ili kuokoa maisha ya Waafrika na kupunguza magonjwa yasababishwayo na maji machafu.
